Archiv města Hořice

accessible Johnová B. – Kratochvílová A. – Trejbal, J.: Městský úřad v Hořicích 1582-1949. Inventář, 1962, 87 s., ev. č. 29. The first record of Hořice appeared in the 1140s in the charter of the Strahov Monastery. Jews were first mentioned to be settled in Hořice in 1524, but their influx did not come until the late sixteenth century, when a Jewish community was probably established there. Jews were mainly engaged in trade and often got into conflict with the Hořice guilds. A dispute in 1681 was resolved by Countess Marie Kateřina Strozziová who issued special instructions, where she defined the possible scope of their business activities for the Jews. As part of the Josephine reforms, the so-called regulated municipality was established in Hořice, and since 1849 an independent municipal municipality. The town was included in the political and judicial district of Hořice. The fonds contains documents of the municipality of Hořice: books, file material, accounting material, plans, and seal matrixes. In the period before 1850, there are records of the Hořice Jews mainly in the town books, - court books, books on hereditary leases, minutes of council meetings and protocols. In general, these are records relating to the sale and purchase of houses and land, debts, petty offenses, trade, complaints, and taxes. For the second half of the 18th and the 19th centuries, a number of Jewish land books have been preserved in the fonds - Jewish book containing original covenants and other Jewish affairs 1756-1840, Jewish contract book 1804-1828, Jewish contract book 1841-1879, Jewish contract book for school seats in the synagogue 1828-1866 and Jewish general book of assets and liabilities for school seats in the synagogue 1844-1872. As for the 20th century, the fonds includes a folder concerning a Jewish funeral office from 1907, and the Holocaust period is covered by the general affairs folder, which contains various regulations, decrees, circulars and correspondence. Neither should be left out commemorative books of the town (chronicles), memorial books of Professor Jandera with registers, lists of inhabitants, registers of members of the municipality and foreign persons, war records of inhabitants and documents concerning domicile and trade matters.
