Documentation of the Generalbauinspekteur fuer die Reichshauptstadt (Construction Inspector General for the Reich's Capital) in Berlin from the Osoby Archive in Moscow, 1938-1942

Documentation of the Generalbauinspekteur fuer die Reichshauptstadt (Construction Inspector General for the Reich's Capital) in Berlin from the Osoby Archive in Moscow, 1938-1942

 The institution of the Generalbauinspekteur für die Reichshauptstadt was created by a special order of Adolf Hitler, 30 January 1937. This was the title bestowed on Albert Speer with the goal of initiating grandiose construction plans that would redesign parts of Berlin and acquire for Berlin a dominant standing in the world. Later on, the authority delegated to Speer was expanded both in Berlin itself and in other cities. The holder of the position was granted authority on the level of a governmental ministry, and he was directly subordinate to Hitler.

 The material in the Record Group includes mainly documentation on matters of construction works and infrastructure in Berlin, including building plans and maps.

 In the files there are also materials preserved that are related to other subjects, including:

 - A file of correspondence regarding POWs and foreign laborers who were conscripted to the Reich, including guidelines for Kriegsangefangenen-Arbeitskommando (commanders of POW labor groups), the planning and construction of POW camps, and the treatment of POWs;

 - Correspondence regarding construction work in additional cities, such as Linz, Nuremberg, Vienna, Munich and Innsbrueck, that were made by request of the Fuehrer.

 - File containing Wirtschaftliche Lageberichte (financial situation reports ) of Wirtschaftsgebiet Berlin (the Berlin financial area), correspondence and reports of other financial organizations and guidelines regarding the preparation of reports;

 - File containing circulars and regulations on various subjects issued by the office of the Deputy Fuehrer, some signed by Bormann. In this file there is also a circular issued by the Deputy Fuehrer from 17 January 1939, to which is attached as an appendix a document issued by Goering, 28 February 1938, containing itemization of "the decisions made by the Fuehrer on the Jewish Question" (Scans 1314-1316).

 The Record Group received the name "Militärangehörige, Fremdenlegion der SS" (SS Military Personnel and Foreign Legion) at the Osoby Archive. This name is erroneous.
