 This sub-record group contains files selected from the State Historical Archives of Latvia in Riga and files received from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington DC.
 
 Description of the sub-record group:
 
 The documentation of the State Historical Archives of Latvia includes correspondence between educational institutions in Latvia and several organizations regarding matters concerning budgets, teachers' salaries and matriculation exams during 1921-1940: reports of teachers' committees meetings in Jewish schools in Riga, matriculation certificates, and lists of pupils and teachers in Jewish schools.
 
 The collection also includes documentation of the Organization of Jews in Latvia for the Advancement of Settlement in Eretz Israel, correspondence, reports, decrees, orders and instructions by heads of the local occupation authorities, the Generalkommissariat (General commissioner's office) of the Riga region, the Gebietskommissariat (District commissioner's office), the Reichskommissariat Ostland (Reich commissioner's office of Ostland), the SS Police, SD Police and Wehrmacht Police in Ostland, documentation of the headquarters of the cities of Riga, Kaunas, Ludza, Liepaja, Cesis and other cities, the municipal administrations of cities in Latvia, reports prepared by the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission including lists of people from the Riga Ghetto who perished and lists of deportees from Riga to Germany, and protocols and reports regarding activities of relief organizations; included in the collection are newspaper clippings from the German occupation period.
 
 Outstanding documentation in the collection:
 
 Correspondence between the Arbeterheim organization and the organization for the support of people's universities in Latvia, regarding the opening of courses for Jewish laborers, correspondence with the administration of the "Hathio" club regarding the opening of summer courses for Jewish teachers, correspondence with the "Hamore" Jewish teachers organization in Latvia, lists of Jewish teachers, reports regarding payments to Jewish educational system employees, and personal records of Jews from the population census in Latvia.
 
 Included in the collection:
 
 - Documentation of the Organization of Jews in Latvia for the Advancement of Settlement in Eretz Israel, including correspondence with Zionist organizations in Eretz Israel, surveys regarding activities of Zionist organizations in Europe and the United States, surveys regarding activities of public organizations in Eretz Israel during 1936-1940, surveys regarding Zionist agricultural activities in Eretz Israel, personal documentation of members of the Organization of Jews in Latvia for the Advancement of Settlement in Eretz Israel, lists of members of Zionist organizations in Latvia, and documentation regarding the financial income of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in Latvia by means of the Hashomer Hatzair movement;
 
 - Correspondence between the Reichskommissariat (Reich commissioner's office of Ostland) and the Generalkommissaren (regional representatives), regarding the return of the trade institutions, food industries, manpower, food, fuel and clothing supplies and newspapers to pro-German Latvians;
 
 - Documentation of the commander of the SIPO and SD in the Ostland area, orders by the commander of the Police in Ostland including the subordination relationships between high-ranking officers, the organization of special police units for the protection of German citizens in Ostland, the organization of aircraft flights between Riga and other cities in Ostland, the transfer of the internal mail of the police, orders by Alfred Rosenberg, the Reichsminister (Reichs Ministry), the Reichskommissariat (Reich commissioner's office of Ostland) and representatives of Ukraine, and an order by Himmler regarding the distribution of authority between the Foreign Office and the Ostministerium (Eastern Ministry).
