M.27 - Public Record Office, London: Documentation pertaining to Jewish matters

Established under the terms of the Public Record Office Act of 1838, the Public Record Office (PRO) was the official archive of the government of Great Britain. Court documents were originally stored at the archive, however, from the middle of the 19th century, government documents were transferred there, and the law was adapted accordingly. The archive was located in the Rolls Building in the center of London from 1854. In 2003, the PRO was combined with a number of other bodies, and today it is known as The National Archives (United Kingdom).

Most of the material in the Yad Vashem Record Group is material from the British Foreign Office, including correspondence with embassies and consulates, reports submitted by various bodies in the office and reports from intelligence agencies. There are also newspaper clippings in the Record Group material.

Among the subjects included in the Record Group: Reports regarding Nazi Germany and its activities against the Jews; the condition of the Jews in Germany and areas under the German occupation (including reports concerning concentration camps, deportations and murder) and in countries subordinated to the Germans or connected to them; reports submitted by embassies and consulates regarding the situation of the Jews and their treatment, including displays of antisemitism in various countries; Nazi propaganda in various countries; Foreign Office correspondence with embassies and other governmental bodies on subjects pertaining to Britain, such as German proposals for exchanges of population or the murder of Lord Moyne; reports concerning the Zionist Movement and the Jews of Eretz Israel [Palestine] (including relations with the Arabs); Jewish emigration, including aliya to Eretz Israel; Jewish refugees during the war and afterwards; British Cabinet and Parliamentary discussions regarding the British policy regarding the Jews and their situation.
