 Dutchman Karel Johannes Frederiks was the secretary general of the German leadership in the Netherlands, the Afdeling Kabinet, during 1940-1945. In order to rescue some of the Jews in the Netherlands, Frederiks proposed to the Germans to administer a list of privileged Jews who would be permitted to reside in three designated areas in the Gelderland region; Frederiks, along with the secretary general of the Ministry of Education, composed lists of 675 Jews who were exempt from deportation, including many Jewish artists; the lists were called the Frederiks list and the van Dam list; the names of the three places of residence were Villa Bouchina in Doetinchem, De Schaffelaar Castle in Barneveld, and De Beizen house in Ede;
