The Cabinet of Jewish Culture at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (Department of Jewish Literature, Language and Folklore) was founded in 1936 on the basis of the Department of Ethnography and Folklore of the Jewish Culture Institute (first name - Institute of Jewish Proletarian Culture, Kyiv, 1928-1936). Acted until 1950. From 1928 to 1936, it functioned as a part of the Institute of Jewish Proletarian Culture as the Cabinet of Music Folklore. The task of the Cabinet was to collect and work on Jewish folk music and ethnography. In 1945, with the beginning of the collection materials for the Black Book, a special commission was set up under the Cabinet, which collected and produced a number of materials. In connection with the case of the Jewish Antifascist Committee (1948), most of the employees were repressed, and the Cabinet itself was liquidated in January 1949. The police bodies seized part of the documents and work of the Cabinet staff, and the remaining ones were transferred to the Library, apparently without catalogues and acts. After 1950, the materials of the Jewish Literature Department and documents related to Jewish history and culture were removed from the Department of Manuscripts and transferred to special storage, and later to the Library's exchange-reserve funds department. In 1990, a special unit was restored in the structure of the Library, which now functions as the Department of the Jewish collections at the Institute of Manuscripts.
