Jews are sent here to learn carpentry, cabinet making, and farming to equip them for life in Palestine. Most of these Jews were students or professional men in Germany and Austria. Gaston Kahn (d. 1979) escaped Marseille at the end of 1943 and settled in the small village of Chauffayer en Champsaur along with other members of the Resistance. He received the "médaille de la Résistance" and "legion d’honneur" for his efforts to assist refugees. He worked with the AJDC for several years after the war. The USHMM Archives contains a Salvadoran citizenship paper (Mantello certificate) issued to the Kahn family in October 1943. Raymond-Raoul Lambert was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 with his wife and four children, all were gassed upon arrival in Birkenau.
