Emil Lederer (1882-1939), economist, social democrat active in Austria and Germany. He helped the flow of intellectual refugees out of Germany to the US, and became a dean of the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research until his death. Leo Strauss (1899-1973), German-born Jewish political philosopher, emigrated to the US in 1937. Max Wertheimer (1880-1943), one of the founders of gestalt psychology, born in Prague, taught in Germany, escaped in 1933 to the US.
