The Kaufbeuren-Irsee sanatorium, which had been treating patients with physical and mental illness since 1876, became one of the institutions in the T-4 euthanasia program under its director, Dr. Valentin Faltlhauser. Patients destined for gassing at Grafeneck and Hartheim passed through Kaufbeuren, and in 1942 Faltlhauser began killing patients by lethal injection.
