Winter 1941/Spring 1942 on the Eastern Front

November - December 1941 Poor quality shots at first. It is now winter; snow lies on the ground. Wreckage of cars and corpses. A cow wanders past. 01:38:52 A group of Russian partisans has been hung and left on display with a sign that reads (partly illegible) "On the night of November 24th, 1941 these beasts of the Russian regiment 239 813 a. 817 mutilated and murdered German wounded." Good CUs of the dead men. Horses drag wounded soldiers on sleds through a small village. The wind whips snow all around and it looks bitterly cold. Three men walk away from the camera through deep, heavy snow. Views of Russian houses. Three men dig holes in the snow. 01:41:01 A soldier poses in a heavy shearling coat. Soldiers on skis lay communications or explosive wire. Using a path dug through the snow, Germans soldiers run to a position behind a snow bank, set up a machine gun, and fire. A solider runs to the latrine area and relieves himself. Two soldiers travel in a ski-lift like vehicle and another stands guard in a stone bunker. A corpse lies face down in the snow. Shot of landscape covered in deep snow. 01:43:25 Smoke comes from the chimney of a Russian house. Soldiers stand in line and are given spoonfuls of medicine or alcohol. Two Russian men in rags smoke hand-rolled cigarettes. It now appears to be early spring, and the camera pans across a semi-flooded landscape: riverbeds rushing from melting snow, the trunks of trees covered with water, Russian children walking across a makeshift bridge over a small creek, waterlogged fields. A pair of empty boots is stuck in the mud. The cameraman seems to be trying to document the end of winter and the coming of spring in the form of water and mud.
