Henry Sharp collection
Henry Sharp (1925-2011) was born Henry Scharf in Krakow, Poland on September 23, 1925. He was forced into the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and survived multiple concentration camps including Auschwitz-Birkenau, Jawiszowice, Buchenwald, and Ohrdruf. While in Buchenwald he changed his name to Henry Ostrowski hoping that he would receive better treatment with a Polish name. He was liberated in April 1945 at Buchenwald. His parents Jonas and Paula Scharf (born Pesla Gumplowicz) and his brother Marcel Scharf perished in the camps. The Henry Sharp papers consist of identification and registration papers documenting Sharp’s immediate post-war life as a Holocaust survivor in liberated Germany. The collection also includes photographs of Buchenwald after liberation.
