Salm family papers

David Salm (1878-1954) was a merchant and World War I veteran born in Schweich, Germany to Joseph and Gertrude Salm. His wife, Anna (Darnbacher) Salm (1880-1959), was born in Bühl, Germany to Ferdinand and Fanny Darnbacher. Their son, Kurt Salomon Elias Salm (1906-1985), was born in Dotzheim, Germany, worked as a merchant in Cologne-Nippes, Germany, and married Meta (Bach) Salm in 1935. Meta (1907-1994) was born in Trier, Germany to baker Isidor Bach and his wife Helena Ackermann. Kurt and Meta Salm immigrated to the United States in 1937, settled in Flushing, New York, and had a son named Harold in 1940. David and Anna Salm immigrated in 1940. The Salm family papers contain biographical materials, correspondence, emigration and immigration records, and restitution papers documenting the Salm family of Cologne, Germany and their immigration to the United States. The papers primarily consist of biographical materials and emigration and immigration records of Kurt and Meta Salm’s immigration to the United States in 1937, and Kurt’s parents David and Anna Salm’s immigration to the United States in 1940. Biographical materials include birth, marriage and death certificates; identification papers; military papers of David Salm, including his Honor Cross of the World War ribbon and certificate received in 1935; letters of recommendation for Kurt Salm; and Salm family genealogy papers including a golden wedding anniversary booklet for David Salm’s parents, Joseph and Gertrude Salm. Also included is a document from 1776 from the Margrave of Baden pledging protection to a Jew named Gottlieb Moses of Bühl, who was likely an ancestor of Anna Salm. There are a few letters to Kurt from 1937 that appear to discuss arrangements for their immigration to the United States. There are also a few other letters from his mother Anna as well as someone named M. Levy. The emigration and immigration records consist of Kurt and Meta Salm’s naturalization paperwork, and David and Anna’s travel arrangements, inventories, visa applications, and correspondence regarding missing luggage.
