Henry Flatow papers

The papers consist of an envelope censored in France sent by Henry Flatow's father Hans Flatow in Italy in March 1945 and two airgraphs (one with envelope) sent to and from Hans and Henry Flatow in Italy and England in May and June 1945. Hans Flatow had been interned and sent to various concentration camps in southern Italy as a foreign Jew (refugee from Nazi Germany) when Italy entered the war in 1940. He managed to escape with other men and was hidden by peasants until the Allied troops, including members of the Jewish Brigade, liberated that area of Italy. It was then that he along with other refugees was placed in the UNRRA camps. He left the DP camp in 1946. His son Heinz (Henry) found shelter in England during the war, and his daughter survived in hiding in France. Hans' wife was placed in a Swiss refugee camp from 1943 until the end of the war.
