Swastika shaped pin commemorating the reintegration of the Saarland with Nazi Germany
Pin created to commemorate the March 1, 1935, reintegration of the Saar region into Nazi Germany. This German industrial region on the border with France and Luxembourg had been removed from German control and placed under a fifteen year League of Nations mandate by the Treaty of Versailles following the end of World War I. The French controlled the coal mining operations as part of the reparations owed by Germany under the treaty. On January 1, 1935, there was a plebiscite to determine the future of the country and an overwhelming ninety percent of the population voted to reunite with Germany. No restrictions on access
