Nussbaum family papers
Joan Schwab (1926-2016) was born Ingeborg Nussbaum to Toni (nee Sichel) and Israel Nussbaum. She and her twin brother Hans were sent by their parents from Berlin, Germany on a Kindertransport to the United Kingdom. They arrived separately in May (Ingeborg) and August (Hans) 1939, and lived in London with the Denham family. Their parents were deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt in July 1942 and then in October 1944 to Auschwitz, where they are presumed to have been murdered. Ingeborg immigrated to the United States in circa 1947, changed her name to Joan, and married Gerald Schwab. The Nussbaum family papers consist of correspondence addressed to Ingeborg and Hans Nussbaum in the United Kingdom, primarily from their parents Toni and Israel Nussbaum in Berlin, Germany, as well as restitution files documenting Ingeborg’s and Hans’ efforts to receive restitution for their Holocaust-era persecution and the murder of their parents.
