'Arnhem, Amsterdam's godchild. A chair is a more precious possession than a gold watch.
augustus 1945
'Arnhem, Amsterdam's godchild. A chair is a more precious possession than a gold watch. The people of Arnhem would not have minded if after the evacuation the Germans had taken the things that were precious in their eyes. But why was it necessary to destroy the things they could not take to Germany? Now the people of Arnhem carefully examine the looted houses to find useful things among the ruins. Poverty has set their imagination at work. For a child a broken spoon is a priceless treasure: for the inhabitant of Arnhem it has a great value also.'
