Germany's largest refinery wrecked by U.S. bombs. Hugo Echorn (left), former personnel director of the Rhenania oil refinery at Harburg, Germany, is shown with a night-watchman and a boy, looking over the blasted ruins of Germany's largest refinery. In the background is the machinery shop of the plant, which was hit in seven attacks by 732 bombers of the Eighth U.S. Air Force which dropped 1,800 tons of bombs. The refinery had been producing 46,000 tons of refined petroleum products monthly but production stopped completely after six of the seven daylight attacks. Approximately 1,000 workers, mostly German, operated the crude oil distillery. Harburg is located near Hamburg.
