Germany's largest refinery wrecked by U.S. bombs.
Germany's largest refinery wrecked by U.S. bombs. This is what remains of the storage area where a tank farm stood at Rhenania, Germany's largest oil refinery at Harburg, Germany. The plant, capable of producing 46,000 tons of refined petroleum products each month, was hit by 1,800 tons of bombs dropped by 732 heavy bombers of the Eighth U.S. Air Force in seven daylight raids. Production was stopped completely after six of the attacks. Approximately 1,000 workers, mostly German, operated the refinery.
