French patriots examine captures German mortar in Normandy.
French patriots examine captures German mortar in Normandy. French patriots raise their flag over a six-barrelled German mortar which was abandoned by the retroating enemy at its position in the mouth of a cave near Floury-sur-Orne, liberated as British troops smashed through Caen. The cave was also used as an ammunition dump by the Germans. As British and Canadian troops continued their advance into the plain section of France, American forces pressed ahead beyond St. Lo, anchor of the German defense line at the base of the Cherbourg peninsula.
