Slaughtered French patriots await burial.
Slaughtered French patriots await burial. A French Red Cross worker looks upon the men who lie in grim dignity at her feet - awaiting the arrival of coffins and the last, final resting place in free French soil. Members of the Maquis, they were prisoner of the Nazis in the Chateau St. Vincennes, one of the famous old forts of Paris. First the Nazis dug pits, then they brought the men out in batches of 15 and killed them with machine gun fire beside communal graves. A French priest led workers to the graves. The bodies were exhumed for identification and for decent burial.
