U.S. forces drive Nazis from St. Gilles. U.S. soldiers looking for snipers leave the parish church of St. Gilles after U.S. forces captures the Normandy town three and one-half-miles west of St. Lo July 26, the day after the opening of the new American offensive in France. A. German armored car smashed by a bomb lies among the debris which littered the whole town. Preceding the advance of U.S. tank and infantry teams, an Allied air armada of 3,000 planes pounded German positions to pave the way for the new break-through.
