An American B-29 Superfortress bomber speeds over western China after its take-off on the June 15, 1944 battle mission to bomb steel works in Japan. The task force of B-29's flow to the Japanese home island of Kyushu where they blasted the Imperial Steel Works in Yawata. Following the raid, General George C. Marshall, chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, said: 'The attack on Japan by the Superfortress D-29 from distant bases introduced a new type of offensive against our enemy. Gen. Marshall explained: 'Because of the enormous range and heavy bomb load of those Superfortresses, far exceeding that of any previous strategie bombers, they can strike from many and remote bases at a single objective.'
