Een Boeing 'B-29 Superfortress'. 'New U.S.Superfortress that bombed targets in Japan. One of the new Superfortresses tests its wings in a practice flight. A fleet of the bombers, largest and fastest in the world, has blasted targets in Japan from bases in the China-India-Burma theater, the U.S. War Department announced on June 15, 1944. The ship is one-half again as large as the flying Fortress, American heavy bomber which has proved so effective against German industrial targets in Western Europe, and has a wing spread of 141.2 feet (42 meters). It carries a far greater bomb load than any other bomber in the world, and its speed compares favorably with the latest and fastest of the world's fighter planes. The great range of the Superfortresses will enable them to operate as an aerial fleet available for assignment to any war theater where they are needed, with any or all of the Allied air, land and sea forces. 'The bombing of Japan by our new Superfortresses is just a beginning,' U.S. Under Secretary of War Robert Patterson said. 'We will strike at the heart of Japan again and again.'
