Convair Catalina vliegboot HOW U.S. NAVY ESCORTED NEW YORK-BOUND IROQUOIS. An aerial view of the United States liner 'Iroquois' (right background), taken 150 miles out at sea while she was en route to New York. In right foreground is a United States Navy destroyer and a U.S. Navy bomber leads the way. The Naval escort was given the liner, which carried 776 passengers and crew from the European War Zones, after U.S. Government received word that the 'Iroquois' would be sunk when it neared the American coast. The information was forwarded by Grant Admiral Erich Raeder, head of the German Navy, with the implication that one of the allied powers would be responsible for the incident.
