Injured U.S. seaman weaves pillow cover during his convalesence. U.S. Seaman first class Paul Louis Palmer, who suffered severe burns while serving aboard ship during the Battle of the Philippines, is shown how to weave a fancy pillow cover by Rebecca Van Meter of the American Red Cross at a field hospital. After undergoing treatment which included a skin-grafting operation. Seaman Palmer was speeded on his way to recovery by the best U.S. Navy nursing care. Members of the Red Cross provided many diversions for the young fighting lad - as they do for all men of the armed forces - during his convalesence. Of the 30,000 members of the Navy and Marine Corps who were wounded from the start of the war through June 30, 1945, only 448 had to be invalided out of the service.
