A U.S. soldier waits for medical treatment at a first aid station just behind the lines as the Americans advanced across the Cherbourg Peninsula to liberate the large French port June 27, 1944. Only the minor wounds are treated at this field station, more serious cases being rushed by planes to England inside of a few hours after the casualties occur.
