"New Yersey"largest battleship ever built, slides into the water 18 month ahead of schedule after launching ceremonies at an East Coast Shipyard. Original specifications for rhis 880-foot addition to the U.S. fleet called for nine 16-inch guns and numerous smaller batteries when the keel was laid. Designed to attain the speed of more than 30 knots, the battleship will have a full load displacement of approximatrly 52,000 tons. It was launches almost exactly a year after the U.S. entered the war.
