First U.S. Liberty ship in Antwerp unloads army boats. A U.S. Army 'J' boat (J-136) is lowered into the port of Antwerp from the James B. Weacer, first U.S. Liberty ship to enter the liberated Belgian port. Another'J' boat on the dock will follow. These light motorboats are used in harbors to control port operations and as launches to carry personnel to and fron ships. Allied vessels filled with armer and supplies for the Allied Expeditionary Force fighting the Germans on the Western Front streamed into the port of Antwerp, third largest in Europe, as soon as the Scheldt River and its approaches were cleared of mines. The port of Antwerp fell to the Allied practically undamaged by the Germans. The peacetime capacity of the ports instaalations was 80,000 tons daily.
