Heavy Japanese guns wrecked by Americans on Saipan.
18 juli 1944
Heavy Japanese guns wrecked by Americans on Saipan. These heavy calibre Japanese guns, never installed, were found wrecked on flat cars near the seaplane base at Tanapag Harbor, Saipan Island, by the American force which took the base. They had been knocked out by the American bombardment preceeding the landings. The capture of Saipan, one of the Central Pacific Marianas group, was completed by July 8, 1944, and gave the Allies a base within striking distance of the Philippines and the Japanese homeland.
