King Alexander's arrival at Marseilles. King Alexander (right, in naval uniform) is photographed on the Jugoslavian cruiser "Dubrovnik" on arrival at Marseilles. On Oct 9, King Alexander of Jugoslavia arrived at Marseilles in the cruiser "Dubrovnik" on an official visit to France. A few minutes after he landed he was assassinated as he drove through Marseilles in an open car, accompanied by M. Barthou, the French Foreign Minister who was also fatally shot. The assassin was cut down by a mounted officer and trampled to death by the infuriated crowd. Twenty-four hours later the "Dubrovnik" steamed out of Marseilles carrying the body of the murdered King back to the naval port of Split.
