Abgeschoben : jüdische Schicksale aus Freiburg 1940-1942 : Briefe der Geschwister Liefmann aus Gurs und Morlaas an Adolf Freudenberg in Genf
Letters from two sisters and a brother (born between 1874-1881), non-Aryan Protestants, who were deported to southern France on 22 October 1940, together with all the Jews of Baden, the Palatinate, and the Saar, and interned in Gurs. They are addressed to a relative, Adolf Freudenberg, the Secretary for Refugees of the World Council of Churches in Geneva. They describe the miserable conditions in the camp, where Else, a physician, directed an infirmary, and their life on (always revocable) "sick leave" in Morlaas, where Robert died in March 1941. The two sisters, with the help of the CIMADE (the French Protestant aid organization), were able to escape to Switzerland in 1941. also contains letters by Freudenberg and others who tried to aid the Liefmanns, extracts from the sisters' "Helle Lichter auf dunklem Grund" (Bern, 1966), and accounts of Gurs by members of the CIMADE who lived and worked in the camp. 1.
