Es gibt Verdammte nur in Gurs : Literatur, Kultur und Alltag in einem südfranzösischen Internierungslager, 1940-1942
Describes cultural activities in Gurs and other French internment camps. Quotes from letters, diaries, cabaret skits, poetry and fiction written by inmates, and reproduces their drawings of camp life. Notes the obstacles to free expression imposed by the French camp authorities. The introduction (pp. 11-43) relates the history of the camps, into which the French crowded, first, Spanish Civil War veterans, then refugees from political and racial persecution in Germany and Austria (many of whom had lived in France since 1933), and finally Jews deported in October 1940 from Baden and the Palatinate. Describes the organization of the camps and the miserable physical conditions. Devotes special attention to the life and cultural production of women in the camp. Between summer 1942-spring 1943, the Jewish internees were rounded up by French police and deported to Auschwitz. Includes bibliographical references (pages 306-320). 321 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm
