The alabaster egg
1971
The alabaster egg is given by King Ludwig II to a young painter with whom he had an affair, and who kept a journal of the affair. The journal passes to Peter, a relative of the painter and then to Hannah, lover of Peter who relives the affair through the journal. The story recreate two apparently different periods in German history. The author reaches deeply into overlapping love stories, both heterosexual and homosexual, against exotic backgrounds of Wagnerian romanticism and the more chilling ones of pre-Hitler experience.
