U.S. Forces enter Berlin. In the Reichschancellery in Berlin, Captain James Griffiths (right) of Grove City, Pennsylvania, an officer of the Second U.S. Armored Division, greets a Russian Army officer who sits behind the huge overturned marble desk at which Adolf Hitler formerly prosided as Nazi Fuhrer of Germany. At 4 P.M. (Berlin time July 4, 1945, soldiers of the Second Armored Division ran up the American Flag over the Adolf Hitler barracks in the Borough of Zehlendorf, thus becoming an official U.S. occupation force in Berlin. Looking on was General Omar N. Bradley, Acting Commander of the European Theater of Operations in the absence of General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower.
