NEW U.S. FIGHTER PLANE ESCORTS AMERICAN 'HEAVIES' OVER GERMANY. A U.S. Army P-51B Mustang fighter plane of the type which escorted American heavy bombers in their attack on targets in Central Germany Jan. 11, when a Focke-Wulf fighter plane factory was severely damaged and 152 enemy aircraft were destroyed, is shown on a U.S. airfield. The new, speedy, high-altitude Mustangs, in action in the European theater since December, destroyed 32 German planes without a loss of their own in approximately one month's time. An earlier version of this long-range fighter-bomber, the A-36 Invader, has turned in remarkable performances in Sicily and Italy. P-51 Mustang.
