The strong Nazi forces swept through Greek defenses, and in two weeks had smashed organized resistance and driven a British Expoditionary Farce to the sea. Yugoslavia was invaded the same day and suffered a similar fate, despito heroic resistance. Germany now had complete control of the Balkan countries and on June 1, drove the British from the island of Creta, a stopping-stone to domination of the Suez Canal.
