Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1.
Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1. The mailing room of The London Times, from which "Stars and Stripes"is sent out. Almost as complex as the composition of the paper itself is its distribution, which requires counting, sorting, bundling, getting the right number of copies to the proper place at the scheduled time, meeting trucks and trains. The Times circulation department handles this job. Papers for outlying bases go by train, are picked up at stations by special service jeeps and trucks for distribution at bases. London distribution is handled by the "Stars and Stripes"circulation department, jeep drivers making deliveries at Red Cross clubs, post exchanges, billet orderly rooms, Army and Navy offices. Paper sells for one penny, equivalent to two cents of American money. "Stars and Stripes"is a paying proposiiton: Lieutenant Colonel Llewellyn recently estimated in New York that since it began operations, the paper had earned over two million dollars.
